With an expected pickup in job creation, home sales should trend up modestly over the course of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if a snow filled and cold February is to blame for poor home sales, was <a title=\"&quot;Snowmageddon&quot; is over, now waiting for &quot;Snowzilla&quot; to arrive\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/08\/snowmageddon-is-over-now-waiting-for-snowzilla-to-arrive\/\" target=\"_blank\">Snowmagedden<\/a> and Snowzilla the reason for <i>increased<\/i> home sales during February 2010?\u00a0 Of course not.\u00a0\u00a0 And although home sales increased 5.1% year-over-year here in Montgomery County MD during February 2010, it was mostly due to increased home buyer demand that some speculate was due in part to the availability of first time home buyer tax credits.\u00a0 Additionally, <a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.realtor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">RealtorMag <\/a>reported that Southern California December home sales dropped about 21% month-over-month, and were down about 9% in compared to the same period in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As home sales are trending lower, it\u2019s reasonable to look for reasons why demand is soft; but can weather be the main reason to keep potential home buyers at home?&nbsp; Probably not.&nbsp; <a title=\"Housing shortage concerns; supply and demand\" href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/23\/housing-shortage-concerns-supply-and-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer demand <\/a>is a robust force that is multifaceted, and can even prevail over seemingly difficult circumstances.&nbsp; Consumer demand can even trump weather, as was the case during the winter of 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-attachment-id=\"1602\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/26\/real-estate-climate-change-and-data-porn\/housesnow3\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg?fit=935%2C599&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"935,599\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"winter home sales\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;winter home sales&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg?fit=525%2C336&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"winter home sales\" class=\"wp-image-1602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dankrell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housesnow3.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumer demand can even be resilient in the face of the speculative effects of global warming.\u00a0 A November 2013 RealtyToday article (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtytoday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Looming Global Warming Catastrophe and its Effect on Real Estate<\/a><\/i>; realtytoday.com) discusses how home buyer demand for coastal property has remained strong even as increased claims that climate change will make these areas uninhabitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing data cause and effect is only conjecture unless it is directly observed.\u00a0 To make sense of the \u201cdata-porn\u201d that is excessively presented in the media, often without proper or erroneous explanation; economic writer Ben Casselman offers three rules to figure out what the media is saying (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Three Rules to Make Sure Economic Data Aren\u2019t Bunk<\/a><\/i>; fivethirtyeight.com): Question the data; Know what is measured; and Look outside the data.\u00a0 Casselman states, \u201c<i>The first two rules have to do with questioning the numbers \u2014\u00a0what they\u2019re measuring, how they\u2019re measuring it, and how reliable those measurements are.
