Rosie the Robot cooked, cleaned and was a companion for Elroy.\u00a0 Rosie\u2019s legacy has set the bar very high for domestic robots \u2013 and we are approaching that standard rapidly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we take for granted many of the automated systems in our home.&nbsp; What takes minutes with the help of our modern appliances, took hours with early rudimentary counterparts; and most likely an entire day without any automated assistance.&nbsp; Certainly the average person fifty years ago would not have imagined their home being automated by programming their appliances, and certainly not on a cell phone.&nbsp; The 1962 and 1964 World\u2019s Fair introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/02\/your-future-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the futuristic smart home to the average person<\/a>; and to some extent, we\u2019ve already surpassed those expectations.&nbsp; We were introduced to the idea of a centralized \u201cbrain\u201d that controlled the home in 1962; and computerized appliances and time saving devices in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube alignright wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TV&#039;s Saturday Morning Cartoon Legacy: The Jetsons (Rosey: head of the household)\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1pphyvgd7-k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/18\/future-depictions-of-our-homes-by-viewing-the-past\/\" target=\"_blank\"> home automation tools <\/a>that were developed through the 1960\u2019s were not available to the average person because of costs and\/or technological limitations.\u00a0 Consider that remote controlled television was developed in the 1950\u2019s, and color television became widely available during the 1960\u2019s.\u00a0 The personal computer as we know it was developed in the 1970\u2019s, but wasn\u2019t widely available until the 1980\u2019s.\u00a0 However, as home automation rapidly progressed with the technological jumps of the last half of the twentieth century, devices became more affordable and common place.\u00a0 Fast forward fifty years, virtual reality is the home entertainment trend and many refrigerators have more computing power than the PC\u2019s developed in the 1970\u2019s!<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As smart homes advance, robotics will be an integral part of your life.&nbsp; In fact, you can buy a robot today.&nbsp; Of course, you\u2019ve heard of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irobot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roomba <\/a>the floor cleaning robot.&nbsp; Roomba\u2019s parent company, iRobot (irobot.com) also sells a pool cleaning robot and other robotic devices for the home.&nbsp; There is the <a href=\"http:\/\/litter-robot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Litter-Robot<\/a> (litter-robot.com) to clean after your cat.&nbsp; And although they\u2019re not like robots portrayed in the movies, there are humanoid robots for sale today that can be programmed for simple tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tumotech, a defunct online magazine about future disruptive technologies and innovations, declared the rise of domestic robots in a May 12, 2014 article \u201c<em>The robot revolution \u2013 The rise of domestic robots<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp; Initially, it is thought that advances in robotics will allow robots to clean homes, take care of the lawn, be a security patrol, and even tend to those who are ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As robotics and other technologies rapidly develop and merge, it is conceivable that we will have humanoid robots doing much of our daily tasks and interacting with us as companions in twenty years!&nbsp; However, having humanoid robots in the home may not be as wonderful as we anticipate.&nbsp; In their chapter <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-0-85729-372-5_26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c<\/a><em>If I had a Robot at Home&#8230; Peoples\u2019 Representation of Domestic Robots<\/em>,\u201d psychologists Scopelliti, Giuliani, D\u2019Amico and Fornara suggest that robots taking over our daily tasks and moving in to our homes may be detrimental to our self-esteem and personal identity (Designing a More Inclusive World.
