{"id":2935,"date":"2017-05-05T08:02:30","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T12:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/?p=2935"},"modified":"2017-05-05T08:04:42","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T12:04:42","slug":"home-listing-syndication-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/05\/home-listing-syndication-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Home listing syndication is big business"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trendmls.com\/Guest\/News\/ShowDoc.aspx?id=7369\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.trendmls.com\/Descom\/Docs\/News\/WhereDoMyListingsGo.jpg?resize=250%2C500\" alt=\"home listing syndication\" width=\"250\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Home listing syndication (infographic via trendmls.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Your home listing is a hot commodity!\u00a0 Not just to home buyers looking to buy, but to those who buy and sell information on the <a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/15\/so-hows-that-internet-working-out-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">internet<\/a>.\u00a0 MLS home listing information syndication is big business.<\/p>\n<p>Much of what you see, hear, and read on TV, radio, and the internet is syndicated and distributed through a broad network of affiliated outlets.\u00a0 The purpose is to have as large of an audience as possible.\u00a0 The larger the audience, the larger the advertising revenue.\u00a0 Syndicating and distributing media content has been around for a very long time, and has been very a lucrative industry for those involved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/23\/bait-and-switch-tactics-by-real-estate-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet syndication<\/a> is no different and has become sophisticated, such that websites will pay for licensed content.\u00a0 The content attracts visitors and generates revenue via ads and\/or pay-per-click.\u00a0 Needless to say, internet syndication has developed to become a multi-billion-dollar industry.<\/p>\n<p>When you think about making money in real estate, you probably think about buying and selling property, not the internet.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t realize that real estate information generates $billions on the internet.\u00a0 Real estate portals generate revenue by publishing content that attracts home buyers and sellers.\u00a0 The sought after content, of course, is your home\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/06\/listing-agent-secrets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLS <\/a>listing.\u00a0 Websites generate income by selling real estate and other professionals access to consumers who visit their sites to view your MLS listing.<\/p>\n<p>You may not know this, but your home\u2019s listing is copyright-protected by your agent\u2019s Multiple Listing Service.\u00a0 The content is licensed and syndicated to internet real estate portals and other publishers for a fee.\u00a0 How much do websites pay for MLS licensed content?\u00a0 Heck, you\u2019d be hard pressed to find that information, much less acknowledgement that there is a fee paid at all!\u00a0 <strong>And I suspect that information is not readily disclosed because consumers would be up in arms if they knew.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, an article by Natalie Sherman appeared in the Baltimore Sun on January 27, 2015 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/bs-bz-mris-zillow-20150126-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>MRIS looks to partner with Zillow<\/em><\/a>) gives a hint about the monetary relationship between MLS boards, syndicators and publishers.\u00a0 Ms. Sherman wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cUnder the current system, <strong>Zillow pays to receive listings from Listhub.com<\/strong>, which has agreements with hundreds of multiple listing services, including MRIS, to provide syndication services to sites such as Zillow.
