Nothing is as it seems.&nbsp; Real estate companies are now technology companies, and technology companies want more of your information to control your opinion and behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube alignright wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eisenhower Farewell Address - Warns of Domination of Scholars by Federal Government\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VtIZBcWBcis?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How much control should big tech have over what you think and do?\u00a0 It\u2019s a compelling controversy that is currently being debated.\u00a0 It\u2019s not clear when the discussion exactly began, but there have been many who have been wary of big tech for decades.\u00a0 Even President Eisenhower had something to say about it in his second 1961 farewell speech (the first being famous for his warning of the military-industrial complex) he also warned. \u201c\u2026<em>we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube alignright wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Google\u2019s The Selfish Ledger (leaked internal video)\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QDVVo14A_fo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once called paranoid, those who feared big tech are being vindicated by the acknowledgments of data collection and leaks to third party users.\u00a0 Additionally, reports of censorship and behavioral control are slowly making its way to public awareness.\u00a0 Sounding like a movie plot about a dystopian future, consider the internal Google video that was leaked by <em>The Verge <\/em>earlier this year (<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/5\/17\/17344250\/google-x-selfish-ledger-video-data-privacy\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Google\u2019s Selfish Ledger is an unsettling vision of Silicon Valley social engineering<\/em><\/a>; theverge.com; May 17, 2018).\u00a0 The leaked video (seen here) discusses the use of data to not only change opinions and shape viewpoints that correspond with the company\u2019s values, <strong>but to change behavior and shape society to \u201ca directed result.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine being told where to buy a home, and which real estate services to use based on your behavioral data.&nbsp; Big tech\u2019s \u201cguiding\u201d of real estate consumers to homes and neighborhoods based on behavioral modeling algorithms seems like it could save time and effort for the consumer.&nbsp; But it could also be considered steering, which is considered to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/06\/fair-housing-for-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fair housing<\/a> no-no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/infographics\/2015\/technology-in-real-estate-then-and-now-infographic-2015-10-15.jpg?resize=250%2C583&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"real estate big tech\" width=\"250\" height=\"583\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Real estate tech (infographic from nar.realtor).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But big tech wants more of your data, at best to improve modeling algorithms.&nbsp; According to a report in the Wall Street Journal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-to-banks-give-us-your-data-well-give-you-our-users-1533564049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Facebook to Banks: Give Us Your Data, We\u2019ll Give You Our Users<\/em><\/a>; wsj.com; August 6, 2018), Facebook has been in conversations with banks to access users\u2019 accounts and transactions.&nbsp; The social media platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-45097040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">denied the story<\/a> the next day.&nbsp; However, the Wall Street Journal reporting by <span class=\"name\">Emily Glazer<\/span>, <span class=\"name\">Deepa Seetharaman<\/span> and <span class=\"name\">AnnaMaria Andriotis <\/span>is compelling given the report\u2019s sources.&nbsp; Some experts are also talking about Facebook wanting to become a consumer marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zillow is also allegedly expanding its data usage.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/zillow-group-to-acquire-mortgage-lenders-of-america-300692598.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zillow announced this week<\/a> of their acquisition of Mortgage Lenders of America.&nbsp; The purchase is said to boost <a href=\"http:\/\/dankrell.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/20\/housing-inventory-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zillow\u2019s \u201cOffers\u201d program<\/a>, offering mortgages for home buyers making offers on the site.&nbsp; However, GeekWire reported (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2018\/zillow-acquires-mortgage-lenders-america-posts-325m-q2-revenue-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zillow acquires Mortgage Lenders of America, posts $325M in Q2 revenue, up 22%<\/a>; <\/em>geekwire.com; August 6, 2018) Zillow\u2019s CEO Spencer Rascoff as saying in the company\u2019s second-quarter earnings call:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>We\u2019re taking our huge advantages, which are our audience and our brand and our resources, and expanding into other business vertically\u2026<\/em> .\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just big tech that wants your data.&nbsp; Traditional companies are realizing the potential of behavioral modeling and guiding consumer behavior.&nbsp; Inman reported earlier this year that co-founder Gary Keller proclaimed Keller Williams a tech company (<em>What the hell is Keller Williams doing? Lingering questions from the Vision Speech<\/em>; inman.com; February 28, 2018).&nbsp; Keller proclaimed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;We are a technology company. No. 1 that means we build the technology. No. 2 that means we hire the technologists \u2026 <strong>We are not a real estate company anymore<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Big tech is losing touch with the average consumer.&nbsp; Home buyers and sellers don\u2019t want to be told what to do.&nbsp; Rather, they want to make organic decisions.
